With over 20 years' experience, we remove harmful material from the environment through recycling or safe disposal at approved storage facilities.

Our purpose built Permitted facility and investment in ‘high end’ equipment, means we are capable of handling and recycling any radionuclide. We offer more disposal routes than any other commercial organisation, across international boundaries, working closely with all key regulatory bodies.

Our dedicated team, with decades of experience, will guide you through the process and will manage the disposal of your materials timely and cost-effectively.

ACB operates to procedures that are monitored and reviewed, and improved where appropriate, as part of the company's management review process, and in accordance with the requirements of its management system certifications, BS EN ISO 9001, BS EN ISO 14001 and ISO/IEC 27001.

OPEN AND CLOSED SOURCE DISPOSAL SOLUTIONS

ACB is Permitted for both open and closed sources. Our analysts work closely with our clients to understand the activity levels of each source and the radiation emission rates to identify a tailored packaging, uplift and disposal plan.

Sealed sources may become a radioactive waste for several reasons:

  • Disused source - no longer required or cannot legally be used any longer.

  • Spent source - where it can no longer carry out its intended purpose.

  • Broken source - the capsule is damaged and the radioactive material inside is exposed.

The legislative requirements for the treatment of radioactive material and the disposal routes available vary depending on whether it is an open or a closed source and the state of the isotope.

ACB also has the capability to offer support and disposal or recycling options for high activity sealed sources (HASS).

WASTE STREAM OPTIONS

Our expertise in radioactive waste management enables us to provide solutions for a wide variety of challenging waste streams from very low level waste (VLLW) through to intermediate level waste (ILW), where we can access the UK’s ILW store.

Whatever the type of waste, we can help find a solution:

  • Organic and Inorganic waste.

  • Oils, Waters, Aqueous liquids and PCBs.

  • Heavy Metals: Mercury, Beryllium.

  • Lab packs.

  • Filters.

  • Resins.

  • Problematic wastes.

Where possible, we recycle and re-use radioactive material rather than dispose of it.

ACB has numerous waste and recycling streams available, including incineration, landfill, UK repository and recycling facilities.

PROTECTING OUR ENVIRONMENT

ACB provides expertise in green waste treatment techniques such as waste segregation, recycling and re-use of materials.

  • Metals recycling: recycling of contaminated metals and the recovery of precious metals.

  • Sorting and Segregation: recovery of non-conforming items from low level and intermediate level waste streams allows for the lowest disposal cost options for our customers and saves valuable regulated disposal activity.

  • Minimising: proven techniques result in significant minimisation of waste volumes for disposal by properly categorising items for appropriate waste disposal.
